Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, told state TV that claims of an agreement were “speculative” and that “nothing has been finalized”. Trump has previously claimed that the two countries are close to an agreement to end the conflict. Trump had promised to attack Iran “very hard” just hours before the statement.
On February 28, the United States and Israel initiated widespread strikes against Iran. Iran replied by attacking Israel and US-allied Gulf states, essentially closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.
Despite agreeing to a ceasefire in April, the United States and Iran have exchanged occasional fire, including two rounds of tit-for-tat strikes this week. At the same time, Trump has often raised the idea of a deal with Iran.
Speaking to reporters, Trump stated, “We have a deal that Iran will never acquire a nuclear weapon, which was the entire point of what we had to go through to accomplish this. So it’s a really important deal.
