According to a person familiar with the situation, the Department of Justice is investigating Gavin Newsom’s wife, a move that the Democratic California governor condemned on Monday as politically motivated. Newsom also stated that he was a target of the probe, while a source confirmed that the governor is not being investigated.
The US attorney’s office in the Eastern District of California is investigating people associated to Newsom for alleged tax-related crimes, including his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, according to a person familiar with the situation.
Newsom’s staff believes investigators have subpoenaed financial data pertaining to the governor and his wife, as well as related businesses and NGOs. His agency stated that investigators had questioned people close to California’s first family about particular transactions that could only have occurred based on such documents.
The inquiries’ announcement marked the latest evidence of Donald Trump’s Justice Department conducting investigations into persons he considers rivals. The individual acquainted with the subject, however, emphasized that the agency’s senior leadership was not involved in the investigation’s inception, claiming that whistleblower reports last year spurred the examination. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche declined to answer questions on Capitol Hill Monday while meeting with senators to seek full-time confirmation to the position.
