Russia Claims a Yacht Made a Dangerous Close’ in the Channel, Prompting Warnings

On Tuesday, Russia reported that one of its warships fired warning shots at a British-flagged boat in the English Channel due to its “dangerous approach.”Signal flares and auditory signals were used to get the yacht’s crew’s attention. Despite these precautions, the vessel maintained its perilous approach,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement. Following that, “the frigate’s commander decided to fire warning shots in the vessel’s direction using the ship’s small arms,” it said.

The statement from Moscow comes after the UK defence ministry stated earlier on Tuesday it was “investigating reports of an incident in the Channel,” according to a UK defense source who told the AFP news agency that a yacht reported a Russian warship firing warning shots.According to the source, the event occurred approximately 20 nautical miles (37 kilometres) south of the Isle of Wight, just outside British waters.

When asked about the reported warning shots, a UK Ministry of Defence official stated: “We are investigating reports of an incident in the Channel.”The defence source stated that it was being treated as an isolated occurrence unrelated to the UK interception in the early hours of Sunday.
