EU foreign policy leader Kaja Kallas visited Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York, discussing diplomatic ways to stop the hostilities between the United States and Iran and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
After the meeting, Kallas said in a post on X that ships should not be charged for passing through the strait after the dispute is over. “Before the war, there were no tolls or fees,” she added, adding that shipping must be “free and unimpeded” in both Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait at the southern end of the Red Sea.
Kallas also stated she discussed the repression inside Iran with Araghchi, referring to a dramatic surge in executions and death sentences. Kallas’s encounter happened while US and Iranian negotiators were engaged in informal negotiations on the sidelines of the Assembly.Araghchi led the Iranian side and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were on the American side. Witkoff said the parties have “successfully completed a round of discussions,” and another is planned soon.
