President Donald Trump has been vocal about his AI goals and who he thinks the US’s chief competitor China. To see proof of this beyond the rhetoric, AI has been at the heart of China’s technology objectives for more than a decade, whether or not Xi talks it up publicly. For Trump, winning the race to AI supremacy over China is more important than whatever risks the technology poses to humans, which he has called “a hoax”.
Narratives of threat” and antagonism hamper global AI governance, China’s foreign ministry said, and called for cooperation so it benefits all. That means when the two presidents sit down on Thursday there will be few more important topics than their AI goals – and what they say and decide will matter to the whole world.
