Mohammed Odeh, the commander of Hamas’ military branch, was killed in a strike in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, only days after his predecessor died in a similar incident. The attack, which targeted a residential building in one of Gaza City’s busiest market districts, killed at least three Palestinians and injured scores more, according to local doctors and witnesses.
The Israeli military and Shin Bet intelligence organization stated facilities used as Odeh’s refuge were targeted after his movements were traced for several months. Hamas has yet to publish an official statement, but a local Hamas source and family claim Odeh, his wife, and their adult son were killed.
Despite the October cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas, bloodshed in Gaza has persisted almost daily. The upper three floors of the al-Kayali building in Gaza City’s center were hit by Tuesday’s strike, which occurred while streets were packed with shopping ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid Al-Adha. Rescue teams hurried to the scene of the strikes, but were unable to reach the upper levels due to the extent of the damage and congestion in the vicinity.
