Kostyantynivka is a strategically important city in eastern Ukraine that Russian troops have penetrated and are currently attempting to encircle. Ukrainian soldiers told the BBC that the entire city is now essentially in a “grey zone” and is no longer under anyone’s control. They enter places behind our backs, and in urban settings, it’s quite hard to drive them out,” explains an unidentified Ukrainian drone pilot who works there. The rest of the Donbas region can be accessed through Kostyantynivka.
If it falls, Russian forces would be able to advance on the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, which are Ukraine’s final remaining strongholds in the east, and be closer to fully capturing Donbas, which is one of the Kremlin’s principal goals in this conflict.
The front lines of Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine have been stalled for months, and Ukrainian commanders claim they have reclaimed more ground this year than they have lost, cutting off Moscow’s vital supply routes between the Russian border and annexed Crimea. Due to the shortages, Russian-appointed authorities in Crimea stopped selling fuel to the general population on Sunday. Additionally, Kyiv has repeatedly attacked oil refineries in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other places in an effort to raise awareness of the conflict among Russians who live far from the front lines.
