Following accusations by US President Donald Trump that Tehran was using drones to attack ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the US military launched strikes on Iran on Friday. In reaction to Iran attacking the M/V Ever Lovely ship with a one-way attack drone, US aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar stations, according to a statement from US Central Command. Iranian forces had “clearly violated” the ceasefire agreement, according to CENTCOM, which also stated that the Singapore-flagged cargo ship was leaving the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast at the time of Iran’s attack.

Trump claimed earlier on Friday that Iran had launched “at least four” attack drones at ships passing through the Strait, one of the most significant chokepoints for the passage of gas and oil in the world. One of the drones struck a large, expensive cargo-carrying ship’s upper deck with great force. The ship was able to continue on its journey despite the damage.
