Naomi Gleit was the 29th employee of Meta when she started working there about 20 years ago. With the exception of creator Mark Zuckerberg, she is currently the company’s longest-serving employee. Since joining him at the age of 21, Gleit has endured numerous challenges and controversies while witnessing a start-up named Facebook grow into a tech behemoth called Meta.
Even though her family needed some convincing that she had made the right choice twenty years ago, she told the BBC that working at Meta was her “dream job” as head of product.She laughs, “My mother was quite disappointed because she wanted me to work for Lehman Brothers.
The global financial crisis began in 2008 when an investment bank failed.
While Meta is still going strong, it has gone through its own earthquakes, including teen mental health crises, toxic online harms, privacy scandals, and allegations of election manipulation. However, she also acknowledges that she has a lot to be proud of, and that Facebook’s notorious “move fast and break things” tagline was a “misunderstood value in isolation.” In a similar vein, she believes it is “unfair” that Mark Zuckerberg has a reputation as a tech bro villain.
