Tens of Thousands of Indians are Evacuated as Cyclone Arnab Makes Landfall

Cyclone Arnab hit India’s southeast coast on Wednesday, causing almost 100,000 people to flee their homes in two states due to fierce winds and torrential rain, according to authorities. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) described Arnab as a “very severe cyclonic storm,” with gusts up to 150 kph and speeds of 125–135 kph.

According to an IMD statement, “Very severe cyclonic storm Arnab is continuing to interact with the land surface along the coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. In advance of the storm, authorities in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha urged thousands of people to relocate inland or seek shelter; adjacent Sri Lanka and Nepal also issued weather advisories.

As the cyclone got closer to the coast, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu declared, “Our top priority is protecting every life. Up to 50,000 people in Andhra Pradesh and 48,000 in Odisha have been advised to relocate to safe locations.

The weather agency in India issued a warning about “widespread damage” to standing crops, “total destruction” of thatched homes, localised floods, and the removal of power and communications poles.
