In addition to winning a gift basket, Matthias R. was also awarded an island. In the year 2005, a man from Kahl am Main, which is located in Lower Franconia, won a competition held by Haribo and became the owner of a private retreat in Canada. As the island ownership chapter is likely to come to a close, the plot is currently offered for sale at 348,000 Canadian dollars, roughly equivalent to 220,000 euros.
Despite the fact that the story appears to be an especially generous promotional effort, there is a rationale behind this. In April of 2005, Haribo started the promotion with everything that helps sell the fantasy of dropping out of school: a private island in Nova Scotia, a wooden house, the first flight there, and a canoe that was fully equipped with fishing gear. The well-known Gold Bears of Haribo were expected to provide the initial supplies, even though, from a nutritional standpoint, they are obviously not ideal for extended wilderness living.
In addition, Thomas Gottschalk was included in the bundle, at least until the campaign. According to the firm, he was meant to help build the wooden house and promote the prize draw on television. At the time, he was Haribo’s advertising partner. A significant amount of effort was put forth in order to promote the goal of escaping everything; it was intended that there would be no less than 15 million promotional stickers placed on the bags of sweets.
