Europe is Ehaken by Trump’s Embrace of Putin, but Not Enough to Sever Ties with the US

As Donald Trump intensifies his support for Vladimir Putin, the already precarious relationship between the United States and Europe over Russia’s attack on Ukraine has become much more strained.

In just two startling weeks, the US president has reached a diesel agreement with his Russian counterpart, relaxed economic sanctions against Moscow, demanded fresh elections in Ukraine, and rejected the legitimacy of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the country’s president, whom Trump claimed was “more difficult to deal with” than Putin.

Increasingly obstinate, Zelenskyy has called the diesel deal a “historic mistake” and warned that further US-Russian accords pertaining to chemicals, banking, gas flows, and immobilised assets would follow.

Ukraine has discovered abrupt restrictions on the delivery of US-made weapons and the usage of Starlink satellite equipment. Zelenskyy told Bloomberg, “I think steps have been taken to convince Ukraine to capitulate,” rekindling the long-standing fear that Trump and Putin would work together to broker a backroom agreement that would result in Kyiv’s surrender.

These concerns were heightened by Moscow’s proposal for a trilateral summit between Putin, Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping. That’s what I would do. In response to a question concerning the trilateral, Trump stated, “Not so much for Ukraine, because Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine.
