Rubio Goes to Samarkand at a Time When the US Wants to get Closer to Central Asia

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on Sunday evening, where he will meet with leaders of five Central Asian countries for talks. Washington wants to strengthen its diplomatic, economic, and security ties in the region.

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, along with the United States, will be at a cabinet meeting called the C5+1 format. Rubio will be there. He will also hold one-on-one talks with top leaders from all five countries.

The visit is important for business reasons. The US State Department says that Rubio is travelling with a group of more than 200 American business leaders. The talks will likely focus on trade, investment, and ways to work together on the economy.

Reporters asked Rubio at Joint Base Andrews on Saturday, before he left Washington, why he chose to go to Uzbekistan when many other international crises need American diplomatic attention. This is an important relationship, Rubio said, adding that the foreign ministers of all five Central Asian countries were meeting at this time because it was the right time.”The strategic business is one of the things that suffers, he said, referring to the fact that diplomatic visits tend to focus on current crises. “But there’s countries you’d like to get to because we want to build our relationships with them.
