Ukraine Will Not Get Funding, and The EU’s Budget Would be Reduced. What May a Le Pen Triumph Mean for the EU

Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally, is running for president of France on a strong anti-EU platform, promising to cut France’s contributions to the EU budget and end assistance to Ukraine. Le Pen has often said she will end financial support for Ukraine. Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Wednesday, she stated that if elected, France could only provide cash for six months due to the “perilous” state of the country’s public finances. This funding will stop, and it is a matter of honesty to tell [Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy] the truth,” she said to Euronews.

Zelenskyy fired back in an interview with the Financial Times on Thursday. “The price to pay is not as high as the value of people’s lives,” he stated. “That is why I believe Ms Le Pen is unfamiliar with certain details.” He added that if Le Pen were elected president, she would have access to “the most powerful European system that works,” emphasising how Ukraine’s military experience might help European countries.

Le Pen has also advocated for an end to EU sanctions against Russia, stating that France could continue to train Ukrainian forces and provide military supplies to Kyiv. Her remarks suggest Le Pen is willing to take a hard line, promising to halt French support for Ukraine in a manner similar to US President Donald Trump.
