What Now for Pope Leo XIV Recovering from Lung Cancer Surgery?

The pope is recovering at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after surgery on Tuesday to remove a malignant growth from his right lung. The Vatican said in a statement that the surgery had been “successfully completed, as planned and within the expected timeframe,” adding that the pope had returned to his room on the hospital’s tenth floor, in a ward next to the papal apartment where Pope Francis was hospitalised a year and a half ago.

The 71-year-old pontiff underwent the 90-minute procedure and the Vatican claimed he “woke up normally”. Part of the pope’s lung was removed during surgery, and he is awaiting test results to see if the cancer has spread.

It didn’t clarify what treatment would follow, with the Vatican adding doctors were not yet considering chemotherapy or other medications until additional test findings. Much would depend on how advanced the cancer was and if it had spread, experts said. But the Vatican claimed cancer was found early and was confined, both critical elements in deciding prognosis.
