Isolated Skirmishes With Police, Thousands March in Protests in Italy

Thousands of protesters demonstrated across Italy’s largest towns on Saturday, protesting the rising cost of living, Giorgia Meloni’s government, and the wars in the Middle East. The protests were largely peaceful, but tensions occasionally flared in the evening in Turin, Florence, Bologna and Rome.

The government has launched a major new security operation in the wake of violence last weekend, with police and military patrolling the main centers. ROME  Tensions rose in Rome as a small group of protestors broke away from the main march up Via Cavour and headed toward the Colosseum.

They got inside the Flavian Amphitheatre there yelling slogans and holding up placards. Later, the officials took them out of the ancient landmark while the march continued through the streets of the city.

Later, a teenage protester also stood in front of a police water cannon truck, which pushed him a few of meters until the young man almost ended up under it. Videos circulating on social media show officers then dragging him away forcefully.

In Florence, too, emotions rose when protestors sought to cross the Santa Trìnita bridge, but police kept the security cordon in place and deployed batons as the marchers pressed to burst through the barrier. A march in Bologna was stopped short of reaching Via Marconi and Via Reno, and bottles and other objects were thrown at security authorities, who replied with a water cannon and tear gas.
