Downing Street has taken aim at “people trying to interfere in our democracy and seeking to stir up division” following JD Vance’s remarks over Henry Nowak’s murder. The US vice president claimed that the “only response” was “righteous anger” and blamed the “mass invasion of migrants” for the killing of the 18-year-old British student who was tragically stabbed by Vickrum Digwa in Southampton last year.
The Downing Street spokesperson stated that the Nowak family had “said they do not want his death to be used to create further division” following the post on X.Even in the worst of situations, our politics ought to unite people. As a nation, that is who we are,” the statement continued.
Following the publication of bodycam footage showing police handcuffing Nowak as he lay dying after Digwa falsely claimed to be the victim of a racial attack, violent protests broke out in Southampton on Tuesday.
Digwa was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 21 years after killing Nowak, who was going home alone on December 3rd after a night out with friends, with a 21cm (8in) blade that he claimed he carried as part of his Sikh beliefs. Nowak passed away “the same way a civilization dies: abandoned and handcuffed by authorities who neither trusted nor cared for him,” according to Vance’s essay.
