The mayor of Moscow claims that a bombing at a restaurant that left at least two people dead and twenty-one injured was a “terrorist attack. According to state media, an unidentified lady carrying what authorities assume to be an improvised explosive device tried to enter a private gathering at the Balzi Rossi restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square. According to officials, the lady carrying the device, a client, and the security guard who stopped her were all killed when the bomb went off before she could get inside.
It was unclear whether the lady intentionally detonated the explosives, and authorities could not immediately identify her. Yesterday, a brutal terrorist attack took place in Moscow, claiming the lives of several people,” stated Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow.
He continued, “Those responsible for this crime will certainly be found and will face the punishment they deserve,” although he did not specify the attack’s motivation or potential perpetrators. According to a source cited by pro-Kremlin REN TV, two of the patients who were carried to the hospital have subsequently passed away from their wounds. Officials have not verified this.
According to the Russian business daily Kommersant, the apparent targets were patrons attending a private function on the restaurant’s outdoor terrace. The event was closely guarded, according to those who spoke to the publication, which might have avoided a much larger death toll.
