A man who survived a ferry accident on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe that killed at least 46 people told the AFP news agency on Thursday that he watched helplessly as people attempted to save themselves, with his best friend and seven of his relatives among the dead.
One of the deadliest passenger boat accidents in the nation occurred on Tuesday when the overcrowded government ferry, a crucial conduit for fishermen and communities surrounding the large lake, overturned in stormy conditions.
At a burial service in the lakeside town of Kariba near the Zambian border, Chance Siyamavhu stated, “Thank God that a wave pushed the sinking vessel and we managed to climb on top.”
The 45-year-old told AFP, “When the boat capsized, most of the people scrambled to get the life jackets but most of them did not even know how to use them,” as he watched from his perch on the overturned vessel as the passengers fought for their lives. “Most people could not make it.””Our relatives were swept in another direction and they sank because we were not in a position to help them,” he stated.
