According to a Trump Tech Adviser, China’s Moonshot AI Stole from Anthropic

China’s Moonshot AI has been accused by a White House adviser of a “large scale” attempt to pilfer the capabilities of leading US AI models. According to Michael Kratsios, US President Donald Trump’s Science and Technology adviser, Moonshot AI executed the campaign using a technique called distillation, in which a weaker AI model pulls answers from a stronger one.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Kratsios stated that Moonshot also received access to limited, state-of-the-art Nvidia servers for model training. The BBC has contacted the White House, Nvidia, Moonshot, Anthropic, and the Chinese embassy in Washington for comment.

The US government has information that Moonshot AI “distilled” capabilities from Anthropic’s Fable AI for the creation of its K3 model, according to Kratsios on X. After its release last week, Kimi K3 attracted attention from all around the world. Many people think it has reduced the difference between Chinese and Western AI models. According to Moonshot, their K3 model can compete with the best US technology. According to Kratsios, Moonshot probably also employed servers running Nvidia’s GB300 Grace Blackwell computing platform.
