In a shocking step, the Canadian prime minister has withdrawn from trade talks with the United States, his country’s former closest partner. While the economic consequences remain unpredictable and potentially severe, the former central banker has stated unequivocally that sovereignty is not a price Canada is willing to pay.
Carney called Washington’s proposed terms a “bad deal” that would have violated Canada’s constitutionally protected use of the French language and its ability to sign trade agreements with other countries. You’re at war when you’re attacked, and we got attacked,” Carney declared, threatening to retaliate “dollar for dollar” against his neighbour.
The spectacular fallout has drawn parallels with the European Union, which has also been subjected to the White House’s ever-expanding demands and negotiating tactics from a Trump administration obsessed with trade deficits and determined to use any means necessary to put America first, even if it means sacrificing friends.
For more than a year, Brussels has struggled to withstand American pressure to repeal environmental, sustainability, and digital regulations, while also attempting to preserve the lopsided EU-US trade agreement reached last year in Turnberry, Scotland.
