In advance of Ukraine’s Independence Day festivities on Monday, Western politicians are travelling to Kyiv this weekend. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, and Alexander Stubb, the president of Finland, met in the capital on Sunday to conduct a roundtable discussion on joint defence cooperation as preparations for the event got underway.
Additionally, Zelenskyy welcomed US Senators James Lankford and Richard Blumenthal to Kyiv. The president claimed to have informed the two about the ongoing threat posed by Russian ballistic missiles and the necessity of strengthening air defences. António Costa, the president of the European Council, is anticipated to travel to Ukraine with other foreign visitors, such as Luc Frieden, the prime minister of Luxembourg.
As the Ukrainian leader reportedly turned down an unexpected proposal for a war-time presidential election from his former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov on Sunday, preparations are on for the yearly event. Elections in general are, in my opinion, extremely dangerous in a conflict like this one. Zelenskyy stated in a press conference that the current elections are a tsunami that will break Ukraine. During these times of war, we can advance toward elections if we wish to destroy the nation,” he continued.
