The BBC can discover that US journalist Austin Tice, who vanished in Syria in 2012, was abducted in a premeditated operation that took more than a month to organise. President Bashar al-Assad of Syria at the time, according to a member of the gang who detained Tice, approved the kidnapping.
Tice was observed getting into a vehicle with a familiar and reliable driver. Many believed for years that the journalist’s kidnapping had been opportunistic and that they had happened across a government checkpoint.
