Saudi Arabia intercepted ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis in Yemen after issuing threats for various places, including Mecca, while France promised to send “military means” to protect Yanbu, a crucial Saudi oil station.
The bombings came as battle raged in Yemen between the Houthis and Riyadh-backed government forces, killing dozens on both sides, according to a tally from seven sources who spoke with the AFP news agency. The rockets were the latest in a string of escalating Houthi attacks since July, when renewed hostilities broke a years-long truce and drew Yemen into the larger Middle East conflict.
Since then, the Houthis have put a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, targeting its tankers and territory while seizing large portions of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, which is critical for Saudi oil shipments.The Saudi-led coalition that has supported Yemen’s government against the Houthis since 2015 reported intercepting six ballistic missiles, preventing strikes on Taif and Yanbu.”Escalations and violations by the terrorist Houthi militia will be dealt with harshly,” coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki stated on X.
Earlier, the Saudi Civil Defence issued a brief sequence of advisories, including one for Mecca, home to Islam’s holiest sites, as well as additional cautions for the Red Sea governorate of Yanbu, Taif, Jeddah, and Tabuk.
