Zelenskyy appeals to European friends as Washington wavers

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed a Russian ballistic missile destroyed a power facility in Kyiv on Tuesday evening without Ukraine having received advance warning from its Western partners, despite US President Donald Trump’s assertions of a “energy ceasefire”.

Such intelligence gaps have been exceptional in the past and inevitably raise questions about whether the Trump administration has restricted intelligence-sharing with Kyiv, given the recent fallout after the US-Russia diesel deal. Trump told reporters last night that Washington has not shut off intel. More on this in our top story below.

In London today Zelenskyy is to visit Prime Minister Andy Burnham as European leaders began to coalesce behind him after a tense weekend of friction with the White House. That is a significant shift in tactics for the UK leader, whose predecessor was far too careful not to alienate Donald Trump in foreign policy.

Mr Burnham was anticipated to announce tougher sanctions and more military and financial aid for Ukraine in the coming weeks  Downing Street said. The UK has also pledged to speed up the supply of British Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs) to help defeat Russian jet-powered drones.
