Germany’s Gen Z Protests Become Aggressive as Shops Stolen

The “Gen Z” protests on Saturday became violent in areas of Germany, with rioters clashing with police and looters hitting shops. There were calm rallies in the afternoon over concerns including rising living costs, but as nite fell riots broke out in various locations.

The tension was especially acute in Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg and Berlin. Police fired water cannons at demonstrators, windows were destroyed and flaming barricades blocked streets. A youth demonstration of over 3,500 individuals, according to police, began at Rosenthaler Platz and headed toward Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin on Saturday.

Hamburg, in northern Germany, also had violent scenes on Saturday evening as rioters created flaming blockades and attacked officers with stones, bottles and fireworks. Unfortunately, today troublemakers have mixed with the peaceful demonstrators in an effort to deliberately provoke and commit criminal offences,” stated a spokesman for the Hamburg Police. “The police will vigorously follow up on the offences identified and explore all necessary investigative avenues. The force has not yet released exact data on the number of arrests and injuries to officers, but said roughly 120 people had been briefly detained during the evening.
