Berlin Student Protests Young Demands clash With Radical Mobilisation

A protest event planned by the youth organization “Gen Z regelt” took place in Berlin on Saturday, when participants called for increased investment in education and an end to rearmament. Among the gathering at the Brandenburg Gate there were very much in evidence pro-Palestine protestors, with banners and slogans. The rally started at 2 p.m. It demands more money for schools and environment protection, low living costs and no compulsory military service. The organisers said the event would be peaceful.

Some establishments on Unter den Linden, Friedrichstrasse and Kurfuerstendamm even built barriers to protect themselves against suspected robbery. At the entrance to the Brandenburg Gate a man in a jumper in the colours of the Palestinian flag was handing out fliers. Next to him a representative of the daily newspaper “Junge Welt” distributed brochures and copies. The paper is monitored by Germany’s domestic intelligence service, which calls it far-left extreme.

The majority of people there were young men and women, many of them wearing the red or black Palestinian scarf, the kufiya. Some wore it round their necks, some wound it round their heads or threw it over their shoulders like a cloak.
