As the World Order Collapses, Pope Leo Calls on Europe to Protect Multilateralism

In a speech in Metz, France, home to Robert Schuman, a pioneer of European integration, Pope Leo XIV commended multilateralism as “the best defence against the desire for dominance.” The pope bemoaned a world characterised by conflict, ranging from famine and war to worsening interpersonal relationships, characterising an environment that is “increasingly uncivilised.” He also denounced the “lies and deception” that he claimed were contributing to the public’s rising mistrust of governments.

Speaking in Schuman’s hometown, a city strongly linked to European reconciliation, Leo stated that by reiterating its dedication to the rule of law and communication, Europe might end this vicious cycle.”Europe can break this cycle by upholding the principle of respect for others, which it has successfully cultivated and maintained, having shown over the past eighty years that it is possible to express divergent opinions, demands, and interests through dialogue rather than confrontation,” he stated.

In front of French President Emmanuel Macron, who is scheduled to join Leo for a Mass later on Tuesday, the Pope spoke in French. The Pope denounced what he described as a new “pointless massacre” on European soil, but not specifically mentioning Russia’s war against Ukraine.
