Rescue officials say 33 people have been killed in a Russian glide bomb strike on two civilian buses in the frontline city of Kramatorsk. Another 18 were wounded, claimed Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin, blaming Russia for trying to murder as many civilians as possible by aiming at buses with passengers.
Images issued by local prosecutors showed the smouldering metal shell of the bus with wreckage and some of the victims on the road. Kramatorsk and the nearby city of Slovyansk are part of a so-called fortress belt that Russia is aiming to conquer in pursuit of Vladimir Putin’s claim to all of Ukraine’s industrial Donbas area.
But Thursday’s bombing comes amid a dramatic spike in Russian attacks across the country and a steep rise in civilian casualties. The UN says there have been more civilian deaths in Ukraine in August this year than all of 2025.
One strike alone damaged a five-storey apartment complex in the town of Pryluky east of the capital Kyiv in the early hours of Wednesday killing 22 people five of them children. Three of the children were just a year old. Moscow has not commented on the latest strike but emergency personnel reported it sparked a fire on two buses, both of which were carrying people.
