Iran and The US Decide to Halt Their Assaults and Meet in Qatar

In an urgent attempt to save their precarious peace deal, the United States and Iran have agreed to stop their military strikes and will have high-level negotiations in Qatar on Tuesday, according to American media that cited senior US officials.

An interim memorandum of agreement agreed on June 17, which sought to put a stop to the conflict that started in late February and delayed transportation along the crucial canal, was in danger of being derailed after days of intensifying military skirmishes.

In exchange for Washington lifting its embargo of Iranian ports, Tehran agreed to permit commercial ships to travel through the Strait of Hormuz safely. Both parties will stand down “for now” and “vessels can move freely” as negotiations are scheduled to continue, a second American official told Axios.

According to Axios, the meeting in Qatar on Tuesday was confirmed by both US officials and a third informed source. According to CNN, a Trump administration official made similar remarks, indicating that the two parties have decided to meet in Doha on Tuesday for additional talks.
