Taiwan Uses a Mobile Launching Mechanism Provided by the US to Test Fire Rockets at China

Taichung, TaiwanAP — On Wednesday, Taiwan’s military demonstrated how it may attempt to fend off a Chinese attack by firing rockets in China’s direction from “shoot-and-scoot” mobile launchers. The most recent live-fire practice was the first time the rockets from the US-supplied HIMARS system were shot into the seas of the narrow Taiwan Strait, which divides the self-governing island from China.

Army Sgt. Wang Ming-hui stated, “We will continue HIMARS training with unwavering determination to protect Taiwan as the nation’s strongest force due to the current enemy threat.” Reduced-range practice rockets, which don’t travel very far from the coast before plunging into the water, were utilized, according to the military. China considers Taiwan to be an outlaw territory and demands that it eventually submit to its authority.

It has conducted significant military drills in the area in recent years and sends warships and aircraft into the skies and waters close to the island nearly every day. Although the United States does not acknowledge Taiwan as a nation, it is its primary supplier of defense weapons and opposes any forceful change to Taiwan’s status.
