According to Vilnius, the drone that NATO shot down over Lithuania on Tuesday nite had infiltrated the nation’s airspace from neighbouring Belarus. Vilmantas Vitkauskas, chief of Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Center, stated that the drone was brought down close to the village of Pratkūnai after flying over Lentvaris, which is close to the country’s capital.
The drone was shot down over Lithuanian territory for the first time. The incident highlights Minsk’s role as a source of drone threats to NATO territory in addition to its assistance to Russia in carrying out drone operations against Ukraine.
The invasion occurred barely one day after Ukrainian officials claimed that Russia was supporting Shahed-type drones during attacks in western Ukraine by using Belarusian mobile networks and signal repeaters.
Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an assistant to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, claimed that the flight paths of Russian drones during a mass strike on Saturday indicated they were using mobile networks over the border.
Beskrestnov stated, “If we look at the movement of jet-powered and conventional ‘Shaheds,’ they stay close to the border with Belarus.” Beskrestnov stated that he thought the drones most likely had access to commercial LTE networks in Belarus.
