Miriam Levin-Gold supports Prime Minister Mark Carney’s proposal for tighter links with the trading bloc, which would allow Canadians to live and work in the EU.The commuter told the BBC in Toronto, “I think it’s great for young people to explore different parts of the world, work in different places, and have different experiences.”
When word of Carney’s address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday morning broke, Canadians welcomed the EU’s desire for Canada to become its first “associate member” and encouraged stronger cooperation on energy and defence.The PM stated, “We should strengthen our people-to-people ties by enabling our youth to live, work, and study wherever they choose on either side of the Atlantic.”
Additionally, he proposed that Canada join the EU’s multibillion-dollar scholarship program, Erasmus+. Canada and Europe were “stronger together” in the face of “geopolitical rupture,” Carney told MEPs.However, before Canadians begin packing their bags, it should be noted that “associate member” status does not yet exist inside the EU and might take years to achieve because it would require approval from all 27 EU member states.
