As investor fever sweeps the nation, at least that’s what the social media memes would like you to believe. Nigerians have been clamouring for a share in the energy industry, which was established by Aliko Dangote, the richest man in the nation and on the continent.
In Africa’s largest-ever auction of its sort, more than four billion shares of his massive oil refinery—representing just more than 3% of the business—went up for sale on Monday. Many people are currently celebrating and making jokes about their newfound (part-)owner status, even though the minimum purchase of 10 shares for approximately $4 (£3) actually represents a tiny percentage of the company.
In a well-known social media video, a Nigerian describes how he stopped a speeding Dangote business truck driver and advised him not to handle company property carelessly. Other jokes depict investors trying to call Dangote to address business issues. Additionally, the Hausa pun “Yangote”which basically means “we all have a share now” has been popular on social media.
