“Revanchist forces” in Armenia and the Armenian diaspora “are still strong,” according to Azerbaijan, and they are attempting to sabotage the historic peace process between the former adversaries.
Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Hikmet Hajiyev told Euronews during a broad panel discussion at the Arab Media Summit in Dubai on Wednesday that “probably Armenian government and Armenian leadership should work to prepare their people for the peace as well.”
Hajiyev, the head of the Presidential Administration’s Foreign Policy Affairs Department, stated, “Now we won the war, but we are also winning in peace which is an uphill struggle.” Our mosques and Islamic cultural heritage were completely destroyed by Armenia during the years of occupation in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur; even pigs were placed inside the mosques. We don’t see it as a sign of retaliation, but we can’t forget that it’s a part of our history and culture,” he continued.
Although his nation is a part of the larger Islamic civilisation, the presidential advisor explained that “currently, three religions, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, with mosques, churches, and synagogues are side by side” in Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan is committed to “preserving the Christian heritage on the sovereign territory of Azerbaijan, regardless of their belonging, and that is a full stop because it’s our cultural heritage,” Hajiyev said.
