Europe Puts on a Brave Face and Unites Behind Ukraine After Being Caught off Guard by Trump Again

European leaders are trying to save face again after US President Donald Trump surprised them by making a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to free thousands of tonnes of diesel that had been banned until now.

Ukraine and its European allies were scared by the news. They have been wary of Trump’s unpredictable diplomacy and his ideas about what makes a peace that lasts. There have been tense times between the two sides of the Atlantic since February of last year, when Trump called Putin out of the blue and started talks to end the war without first consulting any European leaders.

That was the beginning of a string of unexpected events that have shook Europe and turned long-held ideas about the world order after the war on their heads. Some of these are a hastily planned meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska, a leaked 28-point plan that is very friendly to Moscow, and lifting sanctions on Russian oil. After Trump announced the diesel deal on Truth Social on Friday, there was still more to come.

Then Trump did something he does a lot: he attacked the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in public and called for new elections. People often remind Trump that Ukraine’s constitution doesn’t allow elections to happen during wartime.Trump told Moscow, “I think they should get a new leader who can make deals. He could have made a lot of deals, but for some reason he never does.

As in previous episodes, Europe is rushing to unite, support Ukraine, and make clear it will stay on course, no matter what the White House does or says.I believe we should all take this very seriously. “I don’t think there’s any real reason to change our minds today, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday.
