Mamdani-Backed Candidates won the Democratic Primary in New York

In an attempt to shift the Democratic Party to the left, US congressman Dan Goldman was defeated in a New York primary, capping a clean sweep for candidates supported by Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York.

In a race that exposed the party’s differences over the Israel-Gaza conflict, Goldman lost to progressive opponent Brad Lander in New York’s 10th congressional district. Israel is accused by Lander of committing genocide in Gaza. Pro-Israel organizations supported Goldman, who served two terms in office.

The party’s left side gained ground in America’s biggest city on Tuesday when two additional candidates, both democratic socialists supported by Mamdani, won their primary elections. In the 7th district, Assemblywoman Claire Valdez defeated Antonio Reynoso, the president of Brooklyn Borough.

Doctorate student Darializa Avila Chevalier, who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University, won the 13th district election in New York. With the majority of votes counted, Lander, who was also supported by Democratic socialist Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, handily defeated Goldman by 65.7% to 34.1%.

Goldman was first elected to Congress in 2022, and the former New York City comptroller’s bid against him was perceived as a test of Mamdani’s political clout. In an attempt to shift the Democratic Party to the left, US congressman Dan Goldman was defeated in a New York primary, capping a clean sweep for candidates supported by Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York.
