On Monday, CBS News management faced a new crisis when famous “60 Minutes” correspondent Scott Pelley accused the network’s editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, of seeking to “kill” the critically acclaimed newsmagazine.
Pelley made the statements at a contentious meeting between “60 Minutes” staff and the program’s newly appointed executive producer, Nick Bilton. Last week, in a stunning move for the TV news industry, Weiss hired Bilton, an outsider with a background in tech reporting, to oversee the show that ranks as the highest-rated news program on TV.
Bilton replaces “60 Minutes” veteran Tanya Simon, who was fired along with several longtime producers and two journalists, Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.Pelley replied, “She’s killing ‘60 Minutes’” when Bilton said during Monday’s meeting that Weiss adored CBS News and “60 Minutes.” She hates it here . Her job was to kill it, and that’s what she’s been doing.
Pelley also said Weiss and Bilton were unqualified for their jobs and that Bilton would “never be welcome here.” One of the people who briefed CNN on the meeting said Pelley was right to say it, and said he received applause from colleagues right after.
