Trump Signs Decree to Gain Access to new AI Models prior to their Launch

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order that would seek early government access to the most powerful AI models to assess cybersecurity risks and defend key infrastructure. The executive order follows models like Anthropic’s Mythos that have terrified government and Wall Street on security grounds.

The directive asks AI companies to voluntarily share new models with the government up to 30 days before giving access to other partners if they are believed to have enhanced cyber capabilities. Trump was slated to announce the executive order about two weeks ago but postponed it hours before it was set to be signed.

An previous draft of the executive order seen by CNN in May called for a longer, 90-day review period. Several individuals in the AI business told CNN that many AI companies would have wanted a shorter review period given how fast AI models are improving.

A meeting on Monday with key Trump aides and cabinet members helped get the new version through, according to a source familiar with the issue . Trump’s “common sense approach of working with industry to balance innovation and security, making sure America continues to lead the world in AI and cybersecurity,” the White House official said.
