The fighting in southern Lebanon continued even after Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a US plan for a temporary ceasefire. President Donald Trump claimed Monday he had spoken to both sides and “they agreed that all shooting will stop,” after Iran warned Israeli military activity in Lebanon threatened the US-Iran peace.
Lebanon stated it has secured the agreement of Hezbollah to suspend its attacks on Israel and the agreement of Israel not to attack the Lebanese capital Beirut. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the deal. But he claimed attacks on Beirut will continue “if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and civilians” and that Israeli forces would still be operating in south Lebanon.
The truce seems to be mainly holding although there was further bloodshed overnight. Hezbollah stated its militants fired missiles and shells at Israeli tanks in the southern Lebanese villages of Haddatha and Bayada. The Israeli military said it had intercepted two rockets fired from Lebanon in the early hours of Tuesday. There are no reported injuries.
