Russia says it destroyed hundreds of drones over its territory, including around 60 over the Leningrad region Tuesday night in an attack by Ukraine, as a major economic event began. Several persons were injured and infrastructure facilities damaged during the Ukrainian drone attack overnight targeting three districts, Saint Petersburg Governor Aleksandr Beglov stated.
Russian air defenses shot down and destroyed more than 350 Ukrainian drones over territory near the border and further afield, including Moscow, St Petersburg and Novgorod in the country’s west, the Russian Ministry of Defense said.
Ukraine hit “critical infrastructure facilities” in Smolensk, a city in western Russia near the Belarus border, Smolensk governor Vasiliy Anokhin said. Anokhin claimed two firefighters were killed “in the course of fighting a fire caused by debris from a downed enemy drone.” Two other firefighters and one civilian were slightly injured.
Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky claimed “long-range strikes” targeted “key targets” including the St Petersburg oil port, one of the biggest oil transshipment complexes in north-western Russia.
