Tsunami, a mixed-breed border collie, was out on one final task before retirement, sniffing and excavating his way through the rubble of Venezuela’s terrible earthquakes. Over the last ten days, he has helped locate several persons buried beneath the wreckage, identifiable by his heterochromia (one eye brown, the other blue).
“Our four-legged rescuer managed to save 25 people from the rubble of buildings that collapsed during the earthquakes,” Venezuela’s government announced Thursday. Nearly 30,000 first responders and more than 3,300 international rescuers are racing against the clock to locate survivors of the catastrophic earthquakes that rocked Venezuela on June 24. However, these figures do not include a critical component of the effort: dozens of highly trained search-and-rescue dogs deployed with teams from more than 20 nations are assisting in transforming some tragedy stories into stories of survival.
The canines, which have been particularly trained to detect human scent, have spent days searching for people trapped beneath the wreckage of over 200 buildings that collapsed after two powerful back-to-back earthquakes.
