Russia Seeks to Students to Offset its Growing Losses in Ukraine

Oksana Afanayeva, Valery Averin’s foster mother, stated, “He studied drones for three months, but they still threw him into a frontal assault, into the meat grinder.” The 23-year-old joined a new, extensive campaign to enlist young people from colleges and universities in Russia’s drone forces, making him one of the first Russian students known to have died in Ukraine.Afanasyeva grumbled, “He had never even served in the army.”

The campaign to recruit students at universities, technical colleges and vocational institutions to sign army contracts began early this year, as Russia tried to prolong its war effort into a fifth year. It has concentrated especially on individuals who are having difficulty in school or are thinking about quitting. A more elite and technologically sophisticated route through the conflict has been offered by drone units.

Averin grew up in an orphanage in eastern Siberia until he was brought into foster care aged 11. He was in his last year at the Buryat Republican Technical School of Construction when he was drafted into the army.
