Germany has established a new drone security research unit as it ramps up efforts to secure airports and crucial infrastructure from hostile and unauthorized aircraft. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Research Minister Dorothee Bär, and Saxony-Anhalt’s state premier Sven Schulze officially launched the centre on Tuesday in Cochstedt, around 40 kilometres south of Magdeburg, the eastern state capital.
The Drone Security Technology Centre is part of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and has been functioning at the former Cochstedt airfield since 2021.With the new technology centre, we are collaborating with the DLR to create a facility that is one-of-a-kind in the country, where breakthrough technologies for drone security are researched, developed, and tested in real-world laboratories,” said Dobrindt.
The new site expands on the DLR’s current National evaluate site for Unmanned Aerial Systems in Cochstedt, where researchers evaluate drone technologies under realistic settings. Drone research is also conducted at several other DLR facilities throughout Germany. The DLR Cochstedt website says: “Within the growing network of future test-field activities, the National Test Centre plays an integral part as a pioneer for future research and development of new UAS technologies within the DLR and for external partners.
