North Korean state media denounced joint military drills between the United States and South Korea on Wednesday as a “most immediate and open threat,” ignoring US President Donald Trump’s call to halt the exercises.
The nuclear-armed North has long been outraged by the drills, which it sees as rehearsals for an invasion. The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reiterated its position, stating that the “drill poses the most immediate and open threat” to North Korea and “regional security”.
The essay was titled: “We Will Exercise Our Right to Self-Defense for Neutralizing the Military Threat from Hostile Forces through More Transparent Action.” He described the drills as “inappropriate and hostile,” praising North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and criticizing Seoul for not supporting his battle against Iran.
Pyongyang’s statement made no mention of Trump’s drawdown order or his declared intention to resume talks with Kim. Trump stated on Monday that Kim had reacted to his overtures, but provided no other information.
