OpenAI Has Launched ChatGPT for Teens With Enhanced Safety Guardrails

Teenagers, the first generation to grow up with artificial intelligence, are already utilizing ChatGPT for homework, daily queries, and even companionship. Now, OpenAI is releasing a chatbot created exclusively for them.

The San Francisco-based startup says ChatGPT for Teens, which goes live on Tuesday, is designed for people aged 13 to 17 and incorporates stronger safeguards such as content limitations on topics including suicide, self-harm, and romantic or sexual talks.

It also offers homework and study assistance to help kids learn rather than merely producing answers and school essays for them. The company stated that the goal is to steer teenagers toward healthy AI use in an age-appropriate environment.

Parents, educators, and child development experts have raised concerns over children’s usage of AI chatbots, which have been accused of promoting cheating on schoolwork and even suicide. Even adults can anthropomorphize AI and form unhealthy connections with it, but teens’ brains are still developing, making them especially vulnerable.
