Following an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan that killed two US soldiers and left another unaccounted for, the US and Iran have been exchanging strikes for the eighth day in a row. According to Iranian media, Qeshm Island and an under-construction nuclear power station in the southwest city of Darkhoveyn were hit overnight. According to local officials, an energy and water plant in Kuwait was struck a second time.
Jordan’s military fired down three Iranian missiles later on Sunday, while a fourth fell in a remote area, according to the country’s official news agency. It came after the United States warned that the port of Aqaba in Jordan would be targeted.
Jordan demanded an immediate end to what the foreign ministry described as “unjustified and blatant Iranian attacks” and insisted that its security was “a red line that cannot be crossed” by calling Iran’s charges d’affaires in Amman. Both the US and Iran are accused of attacking vital infrastructure as they have increased their attacks on one another in recent days.
Tehran has proclaimed the Strait of Hormuz blocked and targeted US allies in the Gulf, and Washington has reinstated its blockade of Iranian ports. Less than a month after it started, their preliminary ceasefire fell apart.
After missiles were fired against Jordan on Sunday, the Israeli military reported that “several interceptors were launched toward missile debris in order to prevent debris impact within Israeli territory.
