In a fresh escalation of hostile rhetoric between the two sides following the breakdown of the interim accord intended to pave the way for a final peace agreement earlier this month, US President Donald Trump declared on Thursday that he is nearing a decision to conduct an unprecedented strike on Iran.
In an interview with Axios, Trump stated, I am considering a massive attack larger than it has ever been. I’m almost done deciding. The US president continued, “We are prepared for it.” The US State Department warned Middle Easterners to get ready for potential flight cancellations and other air travel delays related to the Iran war concurrently with the US president’s remarks.
The Houthis, a militant organization in Yemen supported by Tehran, claimed on Thursday that they attacked two Saudi oil tankers passing through the Red Sea. Earlier in the day, Trump threatened the Houthis with severe military punishment.
Trump stated on his Truth Social network that the US will hold Iran accountable because the Houthis are Iran’s surrogate and/or proxy. Should the rebels conduct more strikes, Iran and, of course, the Houthis themselves will face severe military retribution.
Earlier this week, Trump declared that the US would take care of the Houthis in the event that a possible blockade of the Bab el-Mandeb, the narrow entrance to the Red Sea that typically handles 12% of global trade, including a quarter of container traffic, threatened shipping and energy exports.
