French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham met for the first time at Downing Street on Thursday. A day after the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum in London opened, Macron praised the “very special relationship” between France and the United Kingdom.Following the meeting, Macron tweeted on X, “Our partnership is more important than ever: defence, energy, support for Ukraine and European security.” “We are carrying on this effort to create a more powerful, independent, and secure Europe in collaboration with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
The talks’ main topic was migration, with Burnham emphasising collaboration with France to lower the number of small boat crossings. The prime minister of the United Kingdom announced on X that the number of French officers assigned to deal with crossings will increase to over 1,050.
Although the number of summer small boat arrivals in the UK has decreased since 2020, Burnham cautioned that “we can’t be complacent” because smuggling networks are still changing their strategies.In addition to discussing “new initiatives” in the Middle East, the French president called the meeting a “very important moment” for bilateral relations.
