President Donald Trump was clear in his response on Monday to growing calls to stop the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI).He posted on social media that “AI taking over the world, destroying humanity, and all other things bad is a HOAX.” He had previously maintained that a “strong and smart” president is “the only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs.
It should come as no surprise that leading Democrats in Congress disagree with Trump. Leading individuals in the AI industry are also against it; in recent days, they have argued for government control and issued severe safety warnings.
However, it is unlikely that new AI safety laws will be passed in the US very soon. To become law, a measure must be approved by both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Republican Party, which has a majority in both chambers, is unlikely to abandon Trump and support limitations or government controls due to his adamant resistance to new safeguards on AI.
Even if they did, the president’s signature would likely be needed for any legislation to take effect. Any prospect for executive action was basically put on hold on Monday when Trump dismissed the necessity for rules.
